Architecture and Institutions
Olympia Kazi with Linda Norden, Damon Rich, Beth Stryker and Gwendolyn Wright
Friday December 12, 6:30pm
Center for Architecture
536 LaGuardia Place
New York, NY 10012
Please join us for a dialogue with Olympia Kazi (Executive Director, Institute for Urban Design), Linda Norden (Director, Amie and Tony James Gallery at the Graduate Center, CUNY), Damon Rich (Founder, Center for Urban Pedagogy), Beth Stryker (Director of Programs, Center for Architecture) and Gwendolyn Wright (Professor of Architecture, Columbia University).
Instead of looking for novel techniques that offer formal solutions to existing building typologies and institutional prototypes, why not look for ways to shift the boundaries that define these instructions in relationship to their community of users.
"Architecture is constantly challenged, criticized, praised, attacked, lobbied, used, consulted, marketed, provoked… The role of architectural institutions is to confront and negotiate those challenges. This dialogue explores the role architectural institutions, from museums to membership organizations to schools, play in the dissemination of architectural education."

This discussion is organized by common room as part of the installation for the New Practices New York/2008 exhibition at the Center for Architecture, which for the month of December addresses the theme Institutions.
