Established in 1998, ifau - institute for applied urbanism is a working group of architects focusing on interrelated, interdisciplinary projects, including architectural and urban design, research, installations and events in the urban context. As a main issue ifau investigates possibilities to transfer urban diversity into architectural space. All projects aim to involve and inscribe contextual processes creating space for negotiation in the design. Flexibility and specificity are characteristics of the generated models. Designed space is formed by negotiation or for negotiation.
ifau’s core members are: Mathis Burandt, Christoph Heinemann, Susanne Heiss, Christoph Schmidt. During the last years ifau has cooperated with Jesko Fezer on several projects for cultural institutions and initiated “Spaces of Negotiation“ a series of exhibitions and talks questioning the social relevance and political competence of architecture.

Jesko Fezer (1970- ) lives in Berlin. He is co-founder of the thematic bookshop pro qm and is co-editor of An Architektur, a political magazine on architecture which also initiated the Camp for Oppositional Architecture. While teaching at several universities of architecture, he has most recently been visiting professor in the Masters’ Program in Architecture at the Academy of Arts, Nuremberg. As an artist, he has collaborated with Axel Wieder to explore questions of public space, institutions, and urban space and related issues at the Berlin Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial and the European Kunsthalle.
